Hannah: Wow! Look at that beautiful art work of colors! What are you doing Lakshmi?

Lakshmi: It’s called rangoli. I am preparing for Diwali celebration.

Hannah: Diwali? Tell me more.

Lakshmi: Diwali is the most celebrated Indian festival. In many parts of India, it is celebrated for 5 days! The festival is based on ancient lunar calendar. Usually the festival falls on late October or early November every year. Diwali is also known as Deepavali. Deep is lamp, so Deepavali is series of lamps.

Hannah: Interesting! How do you celebrate Diwali?

Lakshmi: We clean our houses and places around. We make beautiful rangolis as you noticed, decorate houses with lights and lamps. We prepare many dishes for guests including various sweets. We wear traditional clothes and meet relatives and friends. Children fire crackers.

Hannah: That sounds loads of fun! What is the history behind Diwali?

Lakshmi: Diwali is related to life of lord Rama who was king of Ayodhya in ancient India some  6000 years ago! He was in exile with wife Sita and brother Lakshmana, as his father king Dasharath promised his second queen Kaikeyi of the same. King of Lanka Ravana abducted Sita and kept in his orchard in his palace of gold!

Sita: Do not come near me else I’ll give away my life.

[Hanumana arrives hoping to the scene.]

Hanumana: Evil king Ravana, I am Rama’s messenger. I am here to take mother Sita back.

Ravana: Soldiers, burn tail of this monkey.

Hanuman: I shall burn your Lanka of gold, O Ravana! Rama will be here and bring you to death!

[Hanuman hops again.

Lakshmana: Brother Rama! Let me kill evil Ravana and his army. Give me order.

Rama: Lakshmana, we must give him one chance. Evil Ravana! I give you last chance. Give my Sita back.

Ravana: Never. Soldiers! Kill all of them!

[Soldiers of both parties fight.

Rama kills Ravana with arrow.

Ravana acts of falling.]

Ravana: I am thanking you o Rama! Now, I am liberated. I am being killed by incarnation of God!

[Co-Ordinator covers Ravana who is lying in one corner.

Ravana leaves the scene.

Rama, Sita, Lakshmana, Hanumana walk.

People welcome them from one corner.]
